Description
A festive round challah filled with apples, honey, and raisins — soft, slightly sweet, and perfect for celebrations or holidays.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups bread flour (plus more for kneading)
- 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water (110°F / 43°C)
- ¼ cup honey
- 2 tbsp sugar
- ¼ cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs (plus 1 for egg wash)
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ cup golden raisins (soaked in warm water, then drained)
- 1 medium apple, peeled and finely diced
- 1 tsp cinnamon (optional, for warmth)
Instructions
- Activate yeast: In a bowl, mix warm water, yeast, and 1 tsp sugar. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- Make dough: Add honey, remaining sugar, oil, 2 eggs, and salt. Stir in flour gradually until dough forms.
- Knead: Turn onto floured surface and knead 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- First rise: Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for 1–2 hours until doubled.
- Shape round challah: Roll dough into a long rope, tuck in raisins and apples, then coil into a spiral. Place on parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Second rise: Cover and let rise 45 minutes.
- Bake: Brush with egg wash, sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar (optional), and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30–35 minutes, until golden brown.
Notes
For extra shine, brush challah again with egg wash halfway through baking. Best served fresh with honey or butter.
