Description

Flaky crescent rolls filled with savory breakfast sausage, creamy melted cream cheese, and zesty Rotel tomatoes and green chilies for an irresistible party appetizer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450g) ground pork breakfast sausage, mild or hot
  • 1 block (8 oz / 225g) cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 1 can (10 oz / 283g) Rotel diced tomatoes and green chilies, thoroughly drained
  • 2 cans (8 oz each) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1 cup (115g) sharp cheddar cheese, shredded, optional
  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tbsp water, for egg wash, optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground breakfast sausage until fully browned and no pink remains.
  3. Drain the excess sausage fat completely.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and add the softened cream cheese and thoroughly drained Rotel tomatoes to the hot sausage.
  5. Stir continuously until the cream cheese is completely melted and the filling is well combined.
  6. Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese if using.
  7. Unroll both cans of crescent roll dough and separate them into 16 triangles.
  8. Spoon about 1 to 1.5 tablespoons of the warm sausage filling onto the wide end of each dough triangle.
  9. Carefully roll each triangle from the wide filled end toward the pointed tip.
  10. Place the crescents point-side down on the prepared baking sheets.
  11. Lightly brush the tops with the egg wash if using.
  12. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and deep golden brown.
  13. Let the crescents cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Drain the Rotel tomatoes thoroughly to prevent the filling from becoming watery. Drain the sausage well after browning, and let the baked crescents cool for 5 minutes before serving.
