A comforting layered casserole made with seasoned ground beef, tender sliced potatoes, and a rich homemade cheddar cheese sauce baked until golden and bubbly.

- 1.5 lbs lean ground beef
- 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 2.5 lbs Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 3 tbsp unsalted butter
- 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 2.5 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese, divided
- ½ tsp garlic powder
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 175°C (350°F).
- Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a large skillet, cook ground beef and diced onion over medium-high heat until browned.
- Add minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
- Cook for 1 additional minute and drain excess grease.
- In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
- Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute.
- Slowly whisk in the milk until smooth.
- Simmer until thickened.
- Remove from heat and stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese until melted.
- Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish.
- Spread the beef mixture evenly over the potatoes.
- Pour half of the cheese sauce over the beef layer.
- Top with the remaining potatoes.
- Pour the remaining cheese sauce evenly over the top.
- Cover tightly with foil sprayed with non-stick spray.
- Bake for 50 to 60 minutes until potatoes are fork-tender.
- Remove foil and sprinkle remaining cheddar cheese on top.
- Bake uncovered for 10 to 15 minutes until golden and bubbly.
- Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
Slice the potatoes evenly for consistent cooking. Letting the casserole rest before serving helps the layers hold together beautifully.
