Description

Crispy, golden, and perfectly gluten-free — these homemade corn dogs are the ultimate fair food made allergy-friendly! With a fluffy cornmeal batter and juicy hot dogs, they’re a family favorite for game day or a fun weekend treat.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Batter:

  • 1 cup gluten-free all-purpose flour (with xanthan gum)
  • 1 cup fine yellow cornmeal
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or milk + 1 tsp vinegar)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp melted butter
  • 1 tbsp honey (optional, for extra flavor)

For the Hot Dogs:

  • 8 gluten-free beef hot dogs
  • 8 bamboo or popsicle sticks
  • ¼ cup gluten-free flour, for dusting

For Frying:

  • Vegetable oil (enough to deep fry in a medium pot)

💡 Tip: Want a dairy-free version? Swap the buttermilk for oat or almond milk + 1 tsp apple cider vinegar.

Instructions

  1. Step 1 – Prep the Hot Dogs: Pat the hot dogs dry with paper towels. Insert sticks into each hot dog, leaving enough to hold comfortably. Dust lightly with gluten-free flour so the batter sticks evenly.
  2. Step 2 – Mix the Batter: In a large bowl, whisk together cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, combine buttermilk, egg, melted butter, and honey. Pour wet ingredients into dry and whisk until smooth and thick (should resemble pancake batter).
  3. Step 3 – Heat the Oil: Pour oil into a deep pot, about 3 inches deep. Heat to 350°F (175°C) — test by dropping in a tiny bit of batter; it should sizzle and float.
  4. Step 4 – Dip and Fry: Pour the batter into a tall glass (easier for dipping). Dip each hot dog, coating completely. Carefully lower into hot oil, one or two at a time. Fry for 3–4 minutes, turning until golden brown and crisp.
  5. Step 5 – Drain and Serve: Remove and drain on paper towels. Serve immediately with ketchup, mustard, or honey for dipping.

Notes

💡 Pro Tip: For an extra-crispy coating, dust each hot dog lightly with gluten-free flour before dipping into the batter.
