This Classic Lasagna layers rich homemade meat sauce, creamy ricotta filling, tender pasta, and plenty of melted mozzarella cheese into the ultimate comfort food dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (24 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • ¼ cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 15 oz ricotta cheese or cottage cheese
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 12 no-boil lasagna noodles
  • 3 cups shredded low-moisture Mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground beef, diced onion, and minced garlic in a large skillet over medium-high heat for 6–8 minutes.
  2. Drain any excess grease.
  3. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, and salt.
  4. Add the milk and simmer for 15–20 minutes until thickened.
  5. In a bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, Parmesan cheese, and nutmeg until smooth.
  6. Preheat oven to 190°C (375°F).
  7. Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  8. Spread 1 cup of meat sauce over the bottom of the dish.
  9. Layer 3–4 lasagna noodles over the sauce.
  10. Spread a portion of the ricotta mixture over the noodles.
  11. Sprinkle with mozzarella cheese.
  12. Repeat the layers of sauce, noodles, ricotta mixture, and mozzarella until all ingredients are used.
  13. Finish with a final layer of meat sauce and remaining mozzarella cheese.
  14. Cover loosely with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
  15. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until bubbly and golden.
  16. Garnish with fresh parsley.
  17. Let rest for 20 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

Allowing the lasagna to rest before slicing helps the layers hold together beautifully. For even more flavor, prepare the meat sauce a day ahead.
