Ingredients
Scale
- 4 large bakery croissants
- 1 large egg
- 1 tbsp water
- 8 thin slices deli ham
- 120g Gruyère, Swiss, or sharp Cheddar cheese
- 2 tbsp Dijon mustard or whole-grain mustard (optional)
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Slice each croissant horizontally, leaving a small hinge intact.
- Spread a thin layer of softened butter or Dijon mustard over the bottom half of each croissant.
- Place one layer of cheese on the bottom half.
- Add two slices of deli ham.
- Top with another layer of cheese.
- Close the croissants gently.
- Whisk the egg with the water to make an egg wash.
- Brush the tops of the croissants evenly with the egg wash.
- Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until golden brown and the cheese is melted.
- Allow the croissants to cool for 2 minutes before serving.
Notes
Using day-old croissants helps maintain a crisp exterior while keeping the filling warm and gooey. Serve immediately while the cheese is perfectly melted.
